August 2024
Apologies for the lack of updates, as our website officer stepped down due to his personal workload preventing him attending meetings, the chairman and club secretary have now taken on the task of updating the website and after a few teething difficulties we are now in a position to keep you all informed.
Copston
With Mallard having water extracted for agricultural irrigation (this will be up to the end of September) only Eider is fishable.
Eider
19 visits were recorded to Eider between the 19th of August and the 19th of September. A total of 21 fish were caught by members, of which 15 were catch and release and 6 were taken for the food chain. No Brown trout were caught, and the rod average works out at 1.10 with a 28.5% Kill rate.
We are monitoring the water levels in Mallard and Eider, when we believe it is possible to do so the valve will be opened up to raise the water level back up in Mallard. However this will only be done when we believe it will not affect the ability to safely fish Eider, so please understand that Mallard may not be fishable for a short while.
Wolvey
Wolvey recorded a total of 79 visits between the 21st of August and the 22nd of September.
These were split into the following type of visits.
26 visitors were non fishing, 5 members visited for coarse fishing, 7 visits were classed as working visits (this is classed as members on work parties such as Lice Pipes, mowing or the committee doing odd jobs around the lakes), with 41 members fly fishing for trout and one limited member ticket.
A total of 6 fish were caught, 4 from Tern and 2 from Snipe all of which were returned to be caught another day.
This gives a rod average of 0.14, which as a committee we expect for the time of year.
Our first stockings are due in October, and due to increased transport costs it has been decided to combine both deliveries to the same day and therefore both sets of lakes will be closed for the normal post stocking time at the same time.
We understand as a committee that this may upset some members, however the increase in the price of fish and the increased delivery costs have had to be taken into account and as a result doing this saves us money.
If you have any further questions or queries, please contact a member of the current committee or the current Bailiffs.

Copston Magna
I'll use Roger Press's own words this month:
From 20th October 2021 – 18th October 2022
The fishing for the twelve-month period has been very good despite the hot, dry summer and the large amounts of water taken from both lakes for irrigation.
For anyone who has not been to Copston, Mallard is about 10 feet below the overflow pipe and Eider 4 to 5 feet below normal.
Once again blue dye was added to Eider in February, being one month earlier than previous years, followed by a further application six weeks later and for the first time a 3 rd application after another six weeks. One application was put in Mallard to suppress any algae growth. This has worked extremely well in suppressing weed growth despite the low levels of water in Eider. Lice traps were put in both lakes for the first time this year, but there is little evidence of eggs on the pipes or adult lice on fish.
Work Parties
Fewer work parties than usual were carried out during the summer months as grass growth was minimal due to the hot weather. My thanks to all members who attended one or more work parties this year to keep Eider and Mallard well maintained and looking attractive. No one gets paid or has concessions for this work, I very much appreciate their efforts There are no ‘Work Fairies’ who magically appear overnight to complete these tasks. I would also like to thank Phil Collins who is always willing to give extra help when needed.
Stocking
The water level in Eider is still low, but after recent rain is rising slowly, I will be looking to stock on 7th November.
Mallard unfortunately is going to be some time before it can be stocked safely.
I would like to urge all members to check their emails regularly, your secretary only sends out important information to you i.e. work parties and stocking dates etc, not crap to fill your in box. Should you require information about any of the lakes, when to fish, how the lakes are fishing or what flies to use etc, please contact the relevant bailiff. They are more than happy to help and not just there to make sure you are not fishing with barbed hooks, boobies, doubles, trebles, or
tandem hooks etc.

The club is still looking for a volunteer to join the committee as club secretary, please come forward if you think that you can help. In the mean time I am still collecting data and can now update the catch returns.
The heat of the summer months has drastically effected the returns and to give the members something to go at until Wolvey and Copston are cool enough to restock, we are going to restock Marston Jabbett as soon as possible. Egret being much deeper that the other lakes should continue to fish well until our other lakes are stocked in the autumn.

There were in total 109 visits to Copston Magna and between them they caught 205 trout, of which 3 were browns and 25 were taken. Work has been continuing to improve this venue with the building of slabed pegs on the bank and lighting in the lodge. Egret will be stocked before the end of august and should provide fine sport for the coming weeks. Being very deep, having a sinking line in your armoury can pay dividends here, with big trout down in the cooler water.
This years AGM is going to be held at Bulkington WMC on 19th October 2022 at 8pm. It would be nice to see as many members there as possible.
